Since 2006, Pizzo & Associates, Ltd. has been restoring and stewarding the stormwater basin at the Nantucket Cove community. The Village of Schaumburg mandated native plantings for the severely eroded shoreline. Originally the HOA Board of Directors had priced out a riprock stone solution, but our proposal for a native shoreline buffer came in significantly under that budget.
The deep-rooted prairie plants not only hold the soil in place, but slows down run off. The water is is now clear and teeming with fish, frogs, and turtles. The site is maintained by hand-pulling weeds, using selective herbicide and conducting prescribed fires.
Nantucket Cove Homeowners Association was the recipient of several Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA) awards including Merit in Multifamily Landscape Maintenance (2008), Merit in Commercial Landscape Maintenance (2009), Gold in Sustainable Landscape Maintenance (2010), Silver in Sustainable Landscape Maintenance (2011), Decade award/ Silver in Commercial Landscape Construction (2017), as well as the USEPA & Chicago Wilderness – Conservation and Native Landscape Award (2008).
