South Shore Nature Center Vegetation Monitoring

ecology + vision, llc developed a vegetation monitoring protocol for the Chicago Park District’s natural area sites. The Park District’s selected pilot project in 2012 was the South Shore Nature Sanctuary on the south side of the city along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Monitoring activities include meander and transect/quadrat methods including spring, summer, and fall visits. Collected data is analyzed using FQA (Floristic Quality Assessment) and other methodologies. The project consisted of an overall assessment of existing conditions while recommending vegetation management and future restoration opportunities.
